Huck and Smith have always been unlikely friends, Huck being a restrained and gentle boy while Smith is known for being the rambunctious tomboy in their small American town. When they travel to Smith’s family farm to tend to the animals for winter, Huck and Smith discover their true nature as they slowly begin to switch genders.

THE STORY

During one particularly harsh winter, unlikely friends Huck and Smith are tasked to travel to Smith's family farm and tend to the animals. Smith admires Huck’s large hunting jacket from his father. Huck spends hours admiring Smith’s mother’s jewelry. They give each other these hand-me-downs, which sets off a domino effect for their own liberation in the isolated farmhouse.

As they slowly take on each other's genders, the two immerse themselves in an extended "pretend" game of House. Smith goes out and takes care of the land. Huck stays inside tending to the chores and preparing meals. In this freedom, intimacy grows between them. But as the game continues, Huck and Smith begin to face the follies of their fantasy: Smith becomes more demanding and controlling. Huck becomes softer and more docile. Eventually, Smith and Huck must decide who they will be when they return to their real life, both individually and as partners.

Can they unbound their own identity from the script they’ve been taught? And when they can truly be themselves, do they still need each other?

THAW is a love story about your loved ones teaching you who you truly are. It explores gender being an experience that is reflected back to you and the valley between who we are and how we are seen.
